**Senior Lead Platform Operations Engineer** **Cambridge, United States** Engineering 2 days ago Post Date 008580 Requisition # Senior Lead Platform Operations Engineer (Akamai Technologies, Inc.; Cambridge, Massachusetts): Works within the Network Operations Command Center ("NOCC") and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating networking issues on Akamai's deployed network, including training personnel and improving operations. This position requires expert analysis and evaluation of the NOCC's network operations. This position also involves directly managing employees with similar, if more junior, responsibilities. Specific job duties of the position include: Enhancing Akamai's deployed network, including designing, implementing, and leading operational improvements in networking; responding to immediate networking problems or concerns; providing advanced networking troubleshooting, applying Layer 2 (data link), Layer 3 (network), and Layer 4 (transport) concepts and protocols from the OSI model; coordinating and leading networking specialists carrying out advanced networking troubleshooting; measuring and reporting on the quality of networking tickets completed by other teams; managing a small team of network specialists, including work assignments, regular oversight, and performance evaluation; analyzing existing NOCC work to identify areas of inefficiency or ineffectiveness; proposing and implementing changes to NOCC work to increase efficiency and effectiveness; negotiating time and effort from other departments to improve Akamai's networking; coordinating with developers of networking products on troubleshooting and code fixes; coordinating with networking hardware experts on maintenances, investigations, and repairs; coding networking tools for use by the NOCC; creating alerts based on SQL; and writing or updating documentations and procedures in HTML and markdown. Minimum requirements are: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field through any combination of education, experience, or training, plus a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a network operational role with large scale computer networks. Must have: Proven ability to troubleshoot complex remote networking issues on remote network deployments serving traffic from multiple providers; proven ability to lead and mentor operations engineers; experience training technical networking skills to operations engineers; extensive knowledge of Layer 2 (data link) concepts and protocols, including STP (Spanning Tree Protocol, VLAN, and hand-on experience with switches; extensive knowledge of Layer 3 (network) concepts and protocols, including IPv4, IPv6, ARP, and router protocols including BGP and OSPF; substantial knowledge of Layer 4 (transport) concepts and protocols, including TCP and UDP; extensive knowledge of designs for setting up networks and their potential failure modes; extensive experience with switch hardware and software, including switches from various vendors (eg. HP, Broadcom, Quanta, and Cisco); extensive experience with router hardware and software, including routers from various vendors (eg. Juniper, ASR, and Cisco); practical experience with SQL or MySQL; and practical experience with HTML and markdown.
